The next iteration of Apple’s iPhone could include a camera sensor that offers ‘DSLR quality’ images. That’s according to John Gruber, journalist and known Apple watcher, who has impeccable connections within the company.
In an episode of his Daring Fireball Talk Show podcast, Gruber said, “The specific thing I heard is that next year’s [iPhone] camera might be the biggest camera jump ever.
“I don’t even know what sense this makes, but I’ve heard that it’s some kind of weird two-lens system where the back camera uses two lenses and it somehow takes it up into DSLR quality imagery.”
HTC’s One (M8) uses dual lens technology for tweaking image focus after pictures have been taken. So could Apple take a similar approach to its Taiwanese rival?
Possibly, although Gruber’s comments came just hours after Sony revealed its new 21 megapixel CMOS smartphone camera sensor. It is said to offer much improved phase detection autofocus, with 192 focal points. Sony already supplies Apple with camera sensors for the iPhone.
Another possibility is the development of an Apple patent, seen earlier this year, which detailed plans for attaching interchangeable lenses to the iPhone.
