Samsung has officially unveiled a new smartphone using its Tizen operating system. The Z1, first seen in leaks at the end of 2014, is a budget device getting its initial launch in India.

Priced around £50, the handset features an 800 x 440 four inch screen, a 3.1-megapixel snapper round the back, a 1.2GHz processor and 768MB of RAM. There’s 4GB of storage space on board too.

While unlikely to set the world alight with its specs, this phone still merits 'landmark' status because it's the first handset to market using Tizen.

Last year’s Samsung Z, a higher end effort, was announced but never reached shelves after the Korean company decided to scrap it.

Until now, Tizen has only seen the light of day in a selection of Samsung’s Galaxy smart watches and a range of its smart TVs.

Although developed with Intel and other big name partners, the OS has not enjoyed a happy time over the past 12 months and is unlikely to trouble Google Android.

Samsung is not expected to release the Z1 outside emerging markets, where it is in need of a boost after seeing sales tumble in 2014.
